This: Welcome to the surprise episode of Derry Drops on HBO Max

“It: Welcome to Derry” has a Halloween miracle for fans on HBO Max. The horror drama released a surprise episode Saturday at midnight to commemorate the spooky holiday.

The 30-minute special, titled “A Derry Story,” is set hundreds of years before Pennywise, when “three young people venture into the Western Forest… where they encounter an ancient and terrifying spirit.” Online speculation referenced a potential origin story for the Shokopiwath tribe, the indigenous people mentioned in episode 4.

This comes a few weeks after HBO renewed the series for Season 2. The episode will be set in 1935 during the Great Depression and will focus on the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammunition and end up facing unimaginable horror.

The original drama series, set in the world of Stephen King’s “It” universe and comes from Warner Bros. Television, ranked among the top four most-streamed global series in HBO Max history.

“We’re excited to return to the spooky world of Derry and further expand on Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s horrifyingly iconic adaptation,” Sarah Aubrey, head of original programming for HBO Max, said in a statement. “Along with Brad Caleb Kane, they will break new ground in season two, deepening the terror, mystery and unforgettable story of Pennywise that fans love to devour.”

“Continuing to explore and expand on the amazing world created by Stephen King is an absolute privilege,” the Muschiettis added. “The support from our partners at HBO and Warner Bros. Television is invaluable. Damn, we love our job!”

The series is produced by Andy and Barbara Muschietti, who made the “It” films, through their production company Double Dream. Other EPs include Brad Caleb Kane, Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jamie Travis and Dhana Gilbert. Kane will be the sole showrunner for season 2.

“It: Welcome to Derry: A Story of Derry” is now streaming on HBO Max.
