This year’s N7 Day was all about fighting for the future of Mass Effect

Fourteen years ago, BioWare designated November 7 as N7 Day. Originally a commemoration for the original Mass effectMarking ‘s fifth anniversary, this year’s festivities became a funeral of sorts, attended by fans, developers, artists, and even policymakers. Following BioWare’s sudden shutdown last month and subsequent filings on Mass Effect Universe that have surfaced, players are stepping up their efforts to do justice to the series.

“The people who worked hard and created Mass Effect deserve to see their vision come to fruition,” says Mass effect composer Sam Hulick, joined by many of the game’s cast in a video statement. “I’m not ready to see the story end either.”

After years of calm and conflict with the parent company, EA announced the unceremonious shutdown of BioWare, creator of Mass effect, Dragon Ageand more. This comes amid a controversial acquisition of EA from a consortium of private investors, including Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners. Adding insult to injury, the shuttering ended just weeks before N7 Day, which in the past had fans waiting for news regarding the Mass effect series. Obviously, no one was prepared to attend such a party this year, even though evidence suggests that EA had already brought decorations. Instead, furious stalwarts took the opportunity to step up their campaign to save the series.

After purchasing advertising space in Times Square, more billboards and trucks for the “Save” program Mass effect“Movements emerged in Wales, Texas, California and Edmonton, the latter being BioWare’s stomping ground. In addition to the series’ alumni, various other developers and voice performers joined in. Five Nights at Freddy’s‘s Kellen Goff shared his thoughts on the importance of the series and the movement’s efforts thus far. Owlcat Games has released its own video recalling the series, after hiring Dragon Age writer David Gaider to work on Osiris reborntheir own RPG based on the sci-fi series The extent.

One of the most unexpected fronts of support comes from the New Democratic Party of Canada. Newly elected party leader Avi Lewis expressed his frustrations with EA and private equity when the shutdown was first announced, suggesting stronger policy to protect Canadian companies and even suggesting that the federal government intervene in BioWare’s future. While there is already a lot of Canadian funding in the video game industry (see: Ubisoft), NDP MP Don Davies has increased support for the petition, while Photoshopping his head onto Commander Sheppard.

The major front of the day N7 seems to be Mass effect himself. If the signatures on the petition aren’t convincing, they hope a high number of concurrent players on the original game will make a stronger argument. Regardless of the possibility of a course correction at this point, fans are making themselves unignorable, as display trucks drive outside EA’s headquarters in Redwood, the Madrid offices are tagged, and the announcement of a massive back-catalog restoration, which would have been really cool without everything else, is drowned out by commenters.
