The Kansas City Chiefs suffered their second straight loss of the season against the Denver Broncos in Week 8. In the 28-24 loss, the Chiefs were hit with 11 penalties for 105 yards.

“We fought a lot,” he said. “You have to take the positives from it. You can’t dwell on it. They’re a very good football team,” Kelce said of the Broncos, a team they crushed 31-10 in Week 1.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was criticized for questionable play decisions against the Broncos, such as sending a struggling Harrison Butker to kick a 54-yard field goal in the rain on 4th and 8. His mysterious decision to keep left guard Kingsley Suamataia on the bench also left fans perplexed.

After the game, Kelce shared a strong message about Reid.

While Kelce wants to see the film “and see what the answers are and how we can improve,” the 37-year-old made it clear the fault was in their execution, not Reid’s play calls.

“There’s a mentality that no matter what Coach Reid calls, you’ve got to find a way to get it in the end zone,” he said. “And that’s the bottom line. That’s the mentality. And from now on, that’s got to be how we’re going to roll. And we’ve got to execute.”

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is on the same page. “Yeah, obviously penalties, communication issues between me and the receivers and the running backs and stuff like that,” Mahomes told reporters. “In general, the execution was not of a sufficiently high standard.”

“We made some big plays, and we made some plays against a really good defense. But any time you play a team like that in the division, you have to execute for a full 60 minutes, and we couldn’t do that.”

As for benching Sumataia, Kelce said he liked the guy and was “not sure about the scenario.”

Chiefs TE Travis Kelce took responsibility: ‘I have to be better for my teammates’

“Obviously in our hearts we think we should have gotten the win, but at the same time, that’s not the reality of things,” Kelce said. “The reality is we have to fix a lot of things. The little things, the mistakes, and it starts with the person you look in the mirror, and I’m one of them.”

“I’m frustrated with my time in the league and the procedures that have happened over the last three games. It’s frustrating. You just have to (expletive) do it. I have to be better for my teammates. And that sets the tone for a lot of people in this room, and everyone just has to up the ante from that.”

Next, the Chiefs will look to get back in the win column when they host the New York Jets at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 9.
