Antonio Banderas joined Nicolas Cage in season 5 of “True Detective”.
The duo will lead the next installment of the HBO anthology series, which is expected to begin production in 2027.
The new season comes from showrunner Issa López, who helmed the Alaska-set fourth season, “Night Country,” starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. Season 5 will take place in Jamaica Bay, New York.
Few character details are known, but Banderas will play the role of Rai García while Cage will play the role of Henry Logan.
López is the writer and director, executive producing alongside writer Daniel Zelman as well as Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Cage, Banderas, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Nic Pizzolatto, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey.
Created by Pizzolatto, “True Detective” was nominated for 41 Emmy Awards and won six, including for actors Harrelson, McConaughey, Ali and Foster. According to HBO, season 4 was the most-watched episode of the series to date, with 12.7 million cross-platform viewers.
Banderas is coming off famous roles in the Anthony Bourdain biopic “Tony” as well as the Nicole Kidman-directed “Babygirl.” He also starred in “The Mask of Zorro” and “The Legend of Zorro” and plays Puss in Boots in the Shrek franchise.
Cage is best known for “Pig,” “Dream Scenario,” “Leaving Las Vegas” and, of course, “National Treasure.” “True Detective” is only the second leading television role of his career, following his performance in the dark superhero series “Spider-Noir.”
Banderas is represented by NuCo Media Group and Greenberg Glusker. Cage is represented by WME, Stride Management and attorney Patrick Knapp.
