Trump: I’m “Mr. Veto if the Democrats win”

President Trump is developing a new nickname: “Mr. Veto.” In an interview on “Pod Force One,” the president said that if Democrats took over Congress in the midterms, he would block their agenda and use their veto to drive them to the negotiating table, CNN reports. “I veto everything,” he said, predicting that Democrats would be forced to make deals with Republicans. The quote, according to the Hill:

  • “Well, if that happens, I guess I’ll become Mr. Veto. I’m not going to let them pass. And then at some point we’ll probably make deals. That’s what happened to me. It wouldn’t be the first time you’ve had a president, and he won’t have the House or the Senate. They’ll send stuff over. You veto it, and eventually, after a month or two without a veto…you make a deal.”

The comments, recorded Friday and released Monday, come as new polls show Democrats have the upper hand in the battle for control of the Senate. Trump reiterated his public confidence that Republicans would win, but made clear his backup plan if they don’t: a legislative standoff that won’t end until Democrats agree to his terms.
