Trump plans to fire Athens Ambassador Guilfoyle over alleged appeal for money

President Donald Trump said Monday he is considering firing the U.S. ambassador to Greece. Kimberly Guilfoyle following reports that she pressured a donor into paying a six-figure credit card bill.

“We are looking into it,” he told reporters at the White House on Monday when asked if he was considering firing the diplomat. “We are not happy.”

The ambassador is in the hot seat because of the reports in the Wall Street Journal last week that she tricked a Republican donor into paying a $100,000 American Express bill because she also promised access to top Trump administration officials. A lawyer for Guilfoyle disputed the authenticity of the messages obtained by the Journal and said he was owed money for pre-nomination conferences, which the donor denied.

The State Department, which oversees embassies, did not immediately respond to a request for the president’s latest comments on Guilfoyle’s future.
