President Trump announced that Stephen Miller He would replace Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff just hours after telling 60 Minutes he was going to shake up his team.
When 60 Minutes correspondent Ross Douthat asked Mr. Trump if he would consider firing anyone after Republicans lost both houses of Congress, the president replied: “Yes, yes. A little.”
“I like my Cabinet. I think it’s good,” he said. “But I’ll…maybe make some changes.”
Mr Trump suggested Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was safe for now, despite CBS News report that he asked his advisers this week whether the Pentagon chief should stick around. Asked by Douthat if he had confidence in Hegseth, Mr. Trump replied, “Yes.”
“Look, we’ve won two wars. We’ve won Venezuela and we’ve already taken out billions and billions and billions of dollars. And we’re going to take out several billion dollars and we’ll get along just fine. And you can call it territory, you can call it whatever you want. We won that war in less than an hour,” Mr. Trump said.
After announcing Wiles’ departure on Friday, Mr Trump told reporters he “wanted to make a change”, adding: “sometimes in life you have to make moves”. Wiles tendered his resignation Thursday, a decision linked to the GOP’s midterm defeats, CBS News reported.
Wiles is among the most powerful people to leave the Trump administration. A few Cabinet officials left earlier this year — Attorney General Pam Bondi, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer — but otherwise the president who became nationally famous by firing people on television has largely left his team intact.
