Trump vows to protect Musk, proposes preemptive pardons for staff

What they say: In an interview for the “Pod Force One” podcast published Monday morning, host Miranda Devine asked Trump about rumors that Musk is under investigation or asset seizures.

  • “It’s talk. But if it’s talk, we’re going to have to protect it,” Trump said.
  • Musk has spent nearly half a billion dollars opposing Democrats this election cycle and recently suggested it would be the end of democracy if they win the White House and Congress in 2028.

The plot: Beyond Musk, the president has made clear he would consider granting pardons to his staff and other allies if Democrats pursue them.

  • “I would if I had to. Of course,” Trump said.
  • “I wouldn’t even think about it. I would do it,” he added.

What’s next: Trump also said in the interview that he would love to run for a third term, but that “the language is very demanding.”

  • While seemingly closing the door, he suggested there was still time to implement his agenda.
  • “You know, we have more than two years left. That’s a long time. You can do a lot of things in that time,” he said.
