Two separate shootings over homecoming weekend at a historically black college in North Carolina left one person dead and three injured, police said Sunday.
Deputy Police Chief Jason Swaim of the Winston-Salem Police Department said the two shootings occurred Saturday on the Winston-Salem State University campus, but that it was too early to say whether the shootings were related.
Authorities are investigating and the campus is secure. A previous lockdown has been lifted. He did not say whether any arrests had been made.
“At this point, the investigation is still in its early, preliminary stages,” Swaim said at a news conference Sunday morning.
Chancellor Bonita J. Brown issued a statement Sunday morning, saying “this senseless violence” had shaken the community and that all remaining reunion events had been canceled. Instead, a local church planned to issue a call for prayer in support of the university.
Brown said additional law enforcement will remain on campus while the investigation continues and counseling is available for anyone who needs it.
“We also recognize the concern and anxiety these events have caused among our students, parents, families and the community at large,” Brown said. “We take our responsibility for campus safety seriously and remain committed to the well-being of all those who are part of our campus community. »
