Ukraine launches more than 1,000 drones towards Russia, burning oil facilities | Drone strike news

At least one person was killed and five others injured after Ukraine launched more than 1,000 drones into Russia, one of kyiv’s largest airstrikes of the war.

St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov said firefighters were battling blazes sparked by Sunday’s attacks on the St. Petersburg oil terminal, the Ruchi oil depot and industrial warehouses in the Kolpinsky district, south of the city.

The governor said the “massive” strike killed at least one person and injured five, and several residential buildings and two homes were also hit.

The attack disrupted flights at St. Petersburg’s main airport, one of the country’s busiest, which was limiting operations “for security reasons,” Beglov said.

Russian e-commerce company Ozon said there was a fire at its logistics center in St. Petersburg. Internet company VK said drones attacked its data center in the wider Leningrad region, adding that normal services were available to users.

Leningrad Governor Alexander Drozdenko said 145 drones were shot down and about 20,000 people were left without power following the drone raid.

The Defense Ministry said 1,015 Ukrainian drones were neutralized overnight in 15 Russian regions, Ukraine’s annexed Crimea peninsula and the Black Sea.

Tensions between the United States and Ukraine increase

The strikes come as tensions between kyiv and Washington escalate, with US President Donald Trump criticizing Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure and the prospect of new US sanctions against Moscow remaining uncertain.

On Sunday, Trump defended his Friday decision to suspend further sanctions against Russia, saying he did not want to do anything that would “foolishly” push Moscow “away from the negotiating table.”

In a social media post, the US president said he believed new sanctions would undermine negotiations aimed at bringing a diplomatic end to Moscow’s war against Ukraine, refuting bipartisan criticism that he favored Russian President Vladimir Putin’s interests over those of kyiv.

Trump also lambasted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who criticized Trump’s recent approaches to Putin, for launching strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, saying Zelenskyy “doesn’t want to end this war.”

Trump announced on October 11 that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an “energy ceasefire,” but provided no details. Zelensky told the Financial Times that he was “done” with the ceasefire days later, having backed away from hitting Russian energy facilities while Moscow continued to attack Ukraine’s.

Zelenskyy wrote on X on Sunday that Russia had attacked Ukraine’s energy, oil and gas sectors 76 times in the week since Trump’s announcement.

Energy facilities in four Ukrainian regions were destroyed overnight, leaving tens of thousands of families without electricity, he said, accusing Russia of trying to “cause a blackout.”

“America must understand that Russia is not taking any reciprocal action in response to sanctions relief or agreements,” he said.

Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, Zelenskyy said lifting sanctions on Russia would strengthen Putin’s war effort. He also said that intelligence sharing between the United States and Ukraine had resumed after being “stalled for some time.”

Zelensky said that while he trusted Trump, siding with Moscow would be a tragedy and a “historic mistake” for Washington.

Later Sunday, Zelensky said on social media that he had spoken with U.S. presidential envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner about the results of the Oct. 9 meeting between Washington and Kiev’s negotiating teams in Miami, as well as “next diplomatic steps.”

Russian strikes kill two people

Meanwhile, a Russian airstrike killed a woman in the Ukrainian capital kyiv overnight, while also hitting a metro station and damaging a 25-story residential building, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram on Monday.

The attack, which also hit non-residential buildings and a medical facility, “injured three other people in kyiv,” Klitschko said.

Two Russian attacks on the southern Ukrainian town of Zaporizhzhia killed a woman and injured at least two other people, including a six-year-old girl, local officials said Sunday.

In another article on X on Sunday, Zelenskyy said Russian strikes on residential buildings killed two people and injured 12 others, including two children, in Volyn.

“This morning there was a strike at an agricultural enterprise in Volyn. All necessary services are working on site,” he said.

“In total, over the past week, the Russians attacked Ukraine with almost 2,700 attack drones, 1,700 aerial bombs and 66 missiles, most of them ballistic,” the Ukrainian president wrote.
