The United Nations human rights office has condemned racist abuse against Coco Gauff and called for solidarity to help fight racism and sexism.
The office, led by High Commissioner Volker Türk, posted a message on social media on Saturday saying racist messages sent online targeting the American tennis player were “appalling and illustrate that black female athletes are specifically targeted for racist vitriol and abuse.”
Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam champion and ranked world No. 4, said she received an “insane” amount of racist comments on social media after a controversial point during her China Open match against Sun Xinran on Monday. Gauff lost to Elise Mertens two days later, claiming she had “no energy” and felt like she was going to pass out.

“There is no place in sport for racist or sexist insults and abuse,” the United Nations human rights office said. “Players, coaches and sporting bodies must defend those who face such attacks and fans must push back against those who sully the sport with racism and sexism. »
