Brazilian police have canceled Flávio Bolsonaro’s passports, after he failed to comply with an order to return the documents within 24 hours.
He has not made any public statements since 9 p.m. The last time he spoke publicly was through a video posted yesterday afternoon on his social networks, in which he claims to have never thought of leaving the country.
The order to return his passports was issued on Monday. He confirmed this in a statement and said he was summoned by the police while visiting his father.
Yesterday, in the video published on his Instagram and also sent by his press office, Bolsonaro declared that he would issue the passports, that he would comply with them and that he would continue to work as a political opponent of Lula.
There was speculation that he attempted to leave the country after Argentine media said he was scheduled to cross the Argentine border and take a private flight to the United States, but the plane did not take off.
Argentinian migration authorities said they had not registered his entry into the country.
They said: “Due to the media escalation due to the presence of a private plane at Iguazú International Airport, the authorities carried out checks corresponding to the plane and the crew. Ultimately, it was found that the company’s documentation was in order and no flight plan including the Bolsonaro family was presented.”
His brother Eduardo lives in Texas and had earlier said that if Bolsonaro lost the election he would have to leave Brazil. The candidate suggested that this is what prompted what he claims was a politically motivated request to revoke his passport.
