Bo Bassett made his long-awaited college debut Friday night, and the No. 2-ranked Virginia Tech star delivered the biggest game of the dual.
Fresh off winning the Senior World Championships, Bassett defeated No. 1 Luke Stanich, 13-9, at 141 pounds to cap the Hokies’ 30-6 victory over Lehigh in Bethlehem.
The highly anticipated showdown between two of the best wrestlers in the country capped off a dominant night for Virginia Tech. The Hokies won eight of 10 bouts, collecting two technical falls and two major decisions while taking a 15-3 advantage into intermission.
Lehigh’s two victories came from No. 18 Logan Rozynski, who handed No. 7 Collin Gaj a 5-3 loss at 157 pounds, and No. 7 Nathan Taylor, who blanked No. 15 Jimmy Mullen, 6-0, at heavyweight.
However, the spotlight belonged to Bassett, whose collegiate debut against a two-time All-American lived up to the hype and gave Virginia Tech a decisive victory to open its season.
