Wendy’s is making a major menu change and fans are vowing to leave the chain for good

Wendy’s may be iconic, but the chain’s famous square burgers and Frostys can’t seem to make up for its latest shortcomings. Wendy’s hasn’t had its best year. Burger King surpassed it in the fast food rankings, knocking Wendy’s back to third place for the first time in six years. The chain has suffered from declining sales and a series of restaurant closures. And even when Wendy’s releases limited-time promotional menus, many fans express disinterest, even anger, because they believe Wendy’s is ignoring bigger issues, like rising prices and declining quality.

In a recent social media post, Wendy’s responded to fans’ concerns, writing, “It’s true, yellow packaging is back. It’s also true, it’s not enough. Take this as a sign of change to come.” Today, during its latest earnings conference call, Wendy’s explained how it plans to turn things around. And while it may be a winning strategy for Wendy’s profitability and long-term growth, the plan includes major menu changes that don’t sit well with some fans.

Wendy’s plans to make breakfast optional and improve menu ingredients

Wendy’s is launching the Dave’s Way initiative, a plan that will take several years to implement, in an effort to combat declining sales and bring customers back to the drive-thru. Key elements of Dave’s Way include improving restaurant operations; improve its digital platforms, including delivery options; and make changes to the main menu. The latter starts by changing the availability of breakfast and improving specific ingredients.

During the earnings conference call, Wendy’s CEO Bob Wright revealed that breakfast will now be “location-specific,” meaning that each U.S.-based Wendy’s franchise can now choose whether or not they offer breakfast. Some franchisees have already stopped offering breakfast, which would have improved their profits and justifies the chain-wide decision.

While ditching breakfast may be good for sales, many fans are furious about the change and are taking to Reddit to express their frustration. “This is a mistake. The best part of Wendy’s is their breakfast. If they get rid of breakfast I doubt I’ll go there,” one customer wrote.

Others chimed in saying, “Their breakfast is literally the only reason I still go to Wendy’s” and “Breakfast Baconator and potatoes were all I had left.” »

Wendy’s also plans to improve its existing offerings. Wright reported that Wendy’s has “begun testing improvements to the quality and appeal of our core products, including thicker, crispier bacon, a richer, creamier Frosty, whole lettuce on sandwiches, and improved salads.”

It was only last year that Wendy’s switched to shredded lettuce, but the move upset many fans. “It’s so gross. It gets soggy and gooey,” one fan described, while others reported that the change “is why I stopped going.” It seems Wendy’s has heard its disgruntled fans and is considering returning to the original whole leaf lettuce.

Some customers don’t seem convinced by the Dave’s Way initiative. “Thicker bacon is not your salvation. I can’t wait to have a Baconator with undercooked and chewy bacon,” one Reddit user wrote.

As part of the menu overhaul, which is expected to take effect sometime in 2027, Wright noted that Wendy’s could potentially stop offering “low-volume items” to focus on the chain’s most popular offerings and streamline the kitchen. Wright did not specify what is considered “lower volume.”

Improving ingredient quality was part of Burger King’s revitalization efforts, which appear to be paying off given that the chain recently reported an increase in sales. Only time will tell how much these changes will help Wendy’s.

If you’re a fan of Wendy’s breakfast, it might be worth heading to the chain as early as possible to take advantage of its morning specials in case your local location drops the early bird menu. And if you’re a Wendy’s fan who avoids the burger chain due to its declining quality, perhaps the new and improved 2027 menu will keep you coming back.
