WhatsApp’s AI-powered photo extension tool begins rolling out to iOS

Some WhatsApp users on TestFlight and in the main app now see the option to enlarge an image in the app’s photo editor. Here are the details.

WhatsApp tests AI-powered photos extension

iPhone users with access to Apple Intelligence have a native AI-powered photo extension tool called Extend, which allows users to pinch or drag to enlarge an image beyond its original borders.

This feature, also present on AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and image editing platforms like Photoshop, is now making its way into WhatsApp as well.

According to WABetaInfoThe platform is rolling out an image expansion tool powered by Meta AI, although it is currently limited to certain users, primarily those in WhatsApp’s beta program through TestFlight.

From WABetaInfo:

When users select a photo in their chats, WhatsApp opens the drawing editor. Here they can choose to apply an AI effect to enhance it. Among these, users can find a new option to enlarge their photos. Once users select this option, Meta AI takes a few seconds to analyze the photo and generate the extended version. Once the process is completed, WhatsApp displays the expanded photo in the drawing editor and users can choose to send it. Note that this feature is also compatible with status updates.

The site says that if the user is unhappy with the result, they can press a Cancel button to revert to the original, then try using the tool again to generate a different result.

As is typically the case with WhatsApp beta features, it’s unclear when they might become widely available.

That said, given that it has also been rolled out to Android beta users and some public iOS users already have access to it, a wider rollout may not be too far away.
