Why the Republicans’ huge financial advantage is evaporating on the airwaves

Republicans are banking on a massive financial advantage to help them maintain their majority in Congress. But they’re losing much of that advantage in one important area: TV ad delivery.

Republicans spent $677 million on these ads in 10 key Senate battleground states, compared to $479 million for Democrats. But the Republican Party’s money doesn’t go that far, because it relies more on outside groups that pay much higher rates than the candidates.

That disparity has helped Democrats stay in the fight for control of the Senate amid an onslaught of outside spending from the Republican Party.

In the Ohio Senate race, Republican groups account for 63 percent of the $218 million spent. But despite their nearly two-to-one spending advantage, they account for just over half of the ads on the airwaves, according to data from the tracking service AdImpact. In Texas, Republicans spent three times as much as Democrats, but ran only 58% of the ads. And in Michigan, the GOP accounts for 60% of spending but a little more than half of advertising.
