World Series Game 5 score, live updates: Brewers aim for first title (again); The rays are trying to stay alive (again)

With the World Series title once again on the line, the Milwaukee Brewers will once again try to defeat the Tampa Bay Rays and win the franchise’s first championship.

The Brewers failed to complete the sweep Tuesday and were eliminated in extra innings in a Game 4 loss. In Game 5, they sent ace Jacob Misiorowski to the mound to try to end things.

The Rays, meanwhile, counter with Drew Rasmussen on short rest. Rasmussen was 16-5 with a 2.67 ERA in the regular season and had been excellent on the American League side. In his start in Game 2 of the World Series, however, he allowed three earned runs on six hits in 3 ⅔ innings. Additionally, Rasmussen’s career numbers on short rest are brutal. Small caveats apply, and the World Series is a completely different animal, but in four short-lived starts in his career, he has allowed five earned runs on nine hits in seven innings. He has not started a short rest since 2024.

As a reminder, no team in World Series history has ever blown a 3-0 lead. If we expanded the search to the entire postseason, only the 2004 Red Sox came back from a 3-0 hole to topple the Yankees. This is the only example. The most recent 3-0 World Series lead was in 2024, when the Dodgers blew a big lead over the Yankees, lost Game 4, but then won the Series with a win in Game 5. The Brewers are looking to replicate that feat.
