Zendaya is dusting off her “Dune” boots and diving back into the world of sci-fi.
The star has boarded a new untitled sci-fi that will be written and directed by Alex Garland for A24. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but filming is expected to begin in 2027.
The project marks Zendaya’s latest collaboration with A24 following the hit series “Euphoria,” which ended after three seasons earlier this year, and the dark comedy-drama “The Drama” alongside Robert Pattinson, which became a box office hit, earning nearly $135 million worldwide.
For Garland, the film continues his long-standing collaboration with A24, which produced and distributed his 2024 sci-fi “Ex Machina,” as well as “Civil War,” “Men” and “Warfare.” A24 is also behind its upcoming big-budget video game adaptation “Elden Ring,” starring Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, Nick Offerman and Tom Burke. Filming for “The Elden Ring” wrapped on July 30, and the film is scheduled for release in March 2028.
Alongside “The Drama,” Zendaya appeared in two of the biggest films of 2026, “The Odyssey” and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” both of which broke box office records. Denis Villeneuve’s latest journey to Arrakis, “Dune: Part Three,” releases December 16.
Fans of Garland’s sci-fi — which also includes the Netflix feature “Annihilation” and the FX series “Devs” — might be excited to learn that he’s returning to the genre. But the news could also dampen hopes for a third “28 Years Later.” Garland wrote “28 Days Later,” later reuniting with Danny Boyle for last year’s “28 Years Later” and its fast-paced sequel “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.” Speaking recently at the London Film Festival, Boyle said Garland had written a “fantastic script” for the third “28 Years Later,” but noted he was now busy working on “Elden Ring.” “So it’s on the back burner at the moment,” he said.
Garland’s new science fiction could push it even further.
