GTA VI not yet gold: Rockstar explains the latest effort before launch

Grand Theft Auto VI comes out in a month and has yet to “hit gold,” meaning the final version of Rockstar Games’ most anticipated release of the decade is still being bug-fixed, tweaked, and tinkered behind the scenes.

With players looking at November 19, 2026 and pre-loads scheduled for November 12, 2026, the final version of the game is expected to achieve platform certification with Microsoft and Sony for the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 5 Pro next month, close to the pre-load window.

These words come from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who reportedly spoke to Rockstar Games executives and executives about the making of GTA VI. According to Schreier’s report on the development of Grand Theft Auto VIRockstar’s chief technology officer, Phil Hooker, acknowledged that development work continued until the last moment.

A game that continues to evolve even a month before its release

Speaking to Jason Schreier, Hooker explained: “The game is never completely settled. We never have a specific plan. Even in the last few months, we’ve changed things.”

This helps explain why the game was delayed from May 26, 2026 to November 19, 2026. This currently applies to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions, while Grand theft Automatic VI for PC is expected in the first quarter of 2027.

Beyond that, Hooker explained that GTA6 It took so long to develop not because of internal slip-ups, but rather because of a massive network of interconnected systems that didn’t match the original timelines.

This type of advanced tinkering is expected for a title far grander than anything ever released in the gaming industry. Teams are continually working overtime, refining NPC interactions, fixing edge cases, and polishing the finer details that players love to admire.

Hooker himself stated that in testing a version of GTA VI to review a specific mission, he was distracted for two hours while being drawn into RGT 6′Unexpected encounters with other pedestrians, vehicles, stores and people. That’s how complex it is. GTA VI the open world apparently is.

Innovations and tools in place to enable faster updates?

During the same conversation, Hooker explained that the innovations in technology, systems and tools the team has made to GTA VI will become the cornerstone of “work faster” in the future.

Rockstar Games co-studio head Aaron Garbut also added that the studio has made major changes to GTA VI’s core systems that will remain in place. He said: “We fundamentally changed a lot of things on this project. But now it’s done, and we’re not going to destroy it.”

Obbe Vermeij, a former technical director at Rockstar, previously said online that Rockstar had developed a tradition where all contributors would put down their pencils and track down bugs while exploring and completing the game until the very end, starting two weeks before launch.

However, developer teams were smaller during the era of the 3D universe and the advent of the HD universe, when Vermeij worked at the studio until 2009. Cultural traditions may have changed, given that GTA VI should arrive almost 13 years laterrGTA V and eight years later Red Dead Redemption 2.

The highest stakes release of this decade?

The pressure and expectations on Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games are at an unprecedented level, with the studio having grown to house over 4,700 employees across different departments and headquarters. As a result, the old culture could have been dissolved.

As Rockstar Games continues to refine and refine what’s left of GTA VI bugs and systems, the wait is almost over for players who have been waiting for years. Rockstar’s admission that the game is still in development is not a sign that GTA6 could be delayed again; rather, it is a general reminder that monumental projects still need to be fine-tuned until the very last moment.
