The brain may have come from two separate nervous systems that were crushed, study suggests

Recent research challenges a long-held idea about how the brain develops: Rather than coming from a single source, the brain may emerge from two distinct populations of cells, the study suggests.

“The brain appears as a single organ,” said study co-author Kyle Lohassociate professor of developmental biology at Stanford University. “However, we found that the front and back of the brain arise from different sources, which are pushed together to create the appearance of a single organ,” Loh told Live Science in an email.
