It may be hard to believe, considering all of Call of Duty: Modern 4’s pre-launch community drama and the lower-than-expected beta numbers on PC, but the final game may have been a game-changer – at least so far.
On Steam, Infinity Ward’s latest chapter in the Modern Warfare subseries currently has a very positive rating (92%) based on over 3,100 user reviews. Early access to Modern Warfare 4’s campaign went live on Friday, and review scores have steadily improved as players have experienced more of the campaign’s missions. Many have probably already completed it; the campaign lasts just over six hours, after all.
To access the campaign on Friday, you had to pre-order any edition of the game in digital form. Modern Warfare 4’s official release won’t happen until October 23, which makes it difficult to determine current player numbers because SteamDB, our source for this data, can’t reveal numbers without its tracking bot having a copy of the game.
Putting player counts aside, sentiment around Modern Warfare 4 is considerably more positive initially compared to last year’s Black Ops 7, which is currently mostly negative (37%). Although review scores change over time with each major update, Modern Warfare 4 is currently the highest-rated Call of Duty in over a decade.
However, it’s worth keeping in mind that the people who play the game are probably the most avid players of the series, so perhaps they are more lenient towards it. We haven’t had a chance to test the game yet, having only received the code last week, but IGN published a review of the COD: Modern Warfare 4 campaign on Friday, with a rating of 8/10.
In the rebooted Modern Warfare series, the 2019 Modern Warfare game comes closest to average player sentiment with a mostly positive rating (79%). 2022’s Modern Warfare 2 is much lower with a mixed rating (45%). Outside of Infinity Ward’s production, Black Ops: Cold War is close to a rather positive result (79%).
The next big moment in Modern Warfare 4 is the early release of DMZ, the game’s extraction shooting mode. Like the campaign, DMZ is available early for pre-orders and will unlock tomorrow, October 20. Finally, on October 23, traditional multiplayer will be available, at which point we’ll likely see a change in user sentiment, if it happens.
