PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron denounced on Wednesday the “unacceptable and stupid comments of many foreign leaders” in the wake of the unrest that shook several French cities this weekend.
“Some have claimed that we are being invaded by hordes of migrants and Islamists, which is completely false,” Macron told reporters during a trip to Qatar. His comments clearly attack US President Donald Trump, who denounced this week that France is “conquered, pillaged and burned by migrants, jihadists and communists”.
As hundreds of thousands of demonstrators in France demonstrated peacefully over the cost of living and school conditions this weekend, the chaos — including burned public buildings, looted stores and clashes with riot police — has drawn widespread condemnation in France and abroad, including in the United States, where Trump is using the French unrest to rally voters ahead of November’s midterm elections.
