The editorial boards of Rupert Murdoch’s New York Post and the Wall Street Journal both warned Donald Trump this week against attending a proposed summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Trump would “blow up the Republican Party,” declared the headline of the usually pro-Trump Post editorial, which urged the president to reject Putin’s proposed meeting at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit next month in Shenzhen, China.

Putin reportedly said the meeting would ostensibly focus on ending the war in Ukraine, which he launched in 2022. Trump said he was open to a meeting with the two leaders, but suggested denuclearization be the main goal.
“If President Donald Trump wants a full-blown riot within the Republican Party, following Vladimir Putin’s idea of a ‘Yalta 2’ summit with Xi Jinping is the best way to achieve it,” the Post board warned.
Trump would “volunteer to be outnumbered by our determined enemies,” the board warned.
“Simply announcing that he intends to do this would instantly trigger an all-out rebellion from much of the Republican Party, further hurting the party’s chances in the midterms,” he added, calling it “such a gift to the Democrats that it could give them 60 seats in the Senate – enough to end an impeachment process with conviction.”
The Journal’s editorial board, which has criticized Trump on several fronts during his second term, echoed that warning, saying that “his Yalta 2 courtship with Putin and Xi could shatter alliances at home and abroad.”
The danger, he says, is that Trump, Xi and Putin “are trying to divide the globe.”
“A new triumvirate that divides the world into spheres of influence would shatter America’s global credibility as a reliable ally,” he writes. “US allies may be punching bags these days, but America’s network from NATO to Japan to South Korea to Australia allows America to deter aggression and maintain peace before threats become serious. »
