During debate in the U.S. Senate in Michigan on Wednesday night, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed passionately denied any connection to the Muslim Brotherhood and chastised Republican Mike Rogers for trying to link him to the organization.

“(El-Sayed) was passionate about defunding the police,” Rogers said, responding to a question about defunding law enforcement. “He actually asked the Muslim Brotherhood, excuse me, leader Morsi in Egypt, to also fund the police there. I mean, it’s incredible.”

Rogers was referring to a letter signed by El-Sayed in 2012, according to the Washington Free Beacon, calling on the Egyptian president, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, to purge his country’s police force.

“To question my commitment to the Constitution is truly beneath you,” El-Sayed responded.

“I’m proud of America. I’m proud to be an American. I’m proud of our Constitution which guarantees all people the right to pray as we choose to pray. And the question – that you would ask that – I think is actually really shameful. As someone who actually served under this Constitution, it’s shameful.”

El-Sayed also came under fire after social media posts from his half-sister alleging their mother was involved in Muslim Brotherhood activism in the 1970s resurfaced. El-Sayed denied any personal or family ties to the organization and claimed he was not raised by his biological mother.

“He keeps raising the question of this association with the organization,” El-Sayed said during the debate. “I’ve never been a part of it because my mother, who’s a nurse in Missouri, it doesn’t make any sense. And actually, it’s really beneath you, Mike. It’s really beneath you.”

There is no evidence to suggest that El-Sayed has any affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood.

“I know you mean you’re a victim,” Rogers said. “This is an ideology. An ideology banned in five Muslim countries, an ideology banned in six other different countries.

“An ideology of great concern to law enforcement in the United States, as they use it to fund operations abroad.”
