TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – At least 11 people, including six juveniles and the youngest just 11 years old, were shot and killed in a mass shooting near Florida A&M University’s Bragg Memorial Stadium over Homecoming weekend on Oct. 24.
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said three victims were seriously injured, including one in critical condition, while eight were stable. A Florida A&M student was among the injured.
Police said preliminary information indicates an altercation occurred between individuals prior to the shooting, which Revell called an “isolated incident.” No one was arrested.
“I stand before you tonight, devastated,” Revell said.
Revell spoke directly to the victims and their families: “We have suffered with you and we will continue to bring you the answers you so desperately want.”
Five of those shot are adults and six are juveniles, Revell said. A twelfth person, the grandmother of one of the shooting victims, was injured while fleeing the scene. Revell said one of the victims was a Florida A&M student.
The shooting happened just before 8 p.m. ET. during a busy Homecoming weekend and shortly after the end of the Florida A&M Rattlers football game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The university sent out a campus safety alert at 8:40 p.m. to “shelter in place” and avoid the area near Bragg Stadium.
Police chief: shooting considered an ‘isolated incident’
Revell said investigators believe it was an “isolated incident between two or three individuals and nothing more.”
He asked anyone with information about the shooting to call TPD at 850-891-4200 or Crime Solvers at 850-574-TIPS.
“My message to the community is this… No family should have to endure this kind of violence, this kind of fear, this kind of heartbreak,” he said.
Revell took a moment to recognize “some of the heroic efforts” of first responders.
“We had officers picking up victims and carrying them in their arms because they couldn’t get through the mass of people,” he said.
While choking up, he said it was essential that crowds dispersed so officers could get to victims.
“Without hesitation, they rushed into the middle of all of this, still not knowing where the shooters were, still not knowing how many victims they had. They rushed into the middle of all of this and put themselves in danger.”
Florida A&M campus remains safe, school says
Florida A&M University released a statement on the shooting through a Sachs Media representative sharing condolences and saying “the campus remains safe.”
“The University is aware of an incident that occurred near campus on Perry Street on the evening of October 24. The Tallahassee Police Department is on scene and actively investigating the situation.
“Our hearts go out to the victims and everyone affected by this tragic incident. While the campus remains safe, individuals are encouraged to avoid the area to allow law enforcement to conduct their investigation.
“The safety and security of our students, faculty and staff remains our top priority. We are closely monitoring the situation and will share additional updates as more information becomes available.
