Driver abandons car in Muni Tunnel in hit-and-run, SFPD says

The driver of the car that closed the Muni subway tunnel under Market Street Saturday evening had abandoned the vehicle inside the tunnel after entering it, San Francisco police said.

SFPD said officers arrived at the mouth of the tunnel at Folsom and Embarcadero streets at 3:46 p.m. Saturday. There, they “located a vehicle inside the tunnel that caused damage to city property. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene.”

The department conducted “a hit-and-run investigation,” he said, and the car was “removed from the tunnel and towed from the scene.”

Service was suspended for the remainder of Saturday evening but resumed Sunday, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency said at 9:20 a.m.
