Influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are contagious respiratory diseases that circulate year-round and cause seasonal epidemics. These conditions are reportable in New York State and the Department conducts surveillance to inform the public health response. This dashboard displays New York State case and hospitalization data for influenza, COVID-19, and RSV. It is updated weekly on Fridays. Data is provisional and subject to change.

Methodological notes

  • Authorized clinical and limited-service laboratories that test for influenza, COVID-19, and RSV using a qualified laboratory test are required to report positive results to New York State.
    • “Case” refers to an individual who has a qualified laboratory test positive for influenza, COVID-19, or RSV identified in the Communicable Disease Electronic Surveillance System (CDESS). The case data presented is provisional and may be updated as reports are received by the Ministry.
  • Hospitals are required to report the total number of hospitalizations associated with laboratory-confirmed influenza, COVID-19, or RSV each week by age group. Hospitalization data is collected using the Ministry’s Survey Management and Response Tool (SMART) Survey of Respiratory Hospitalizations and Deaths. Hospitals are required to complete this survey every Wednesday for the preceding Sunday through Saturday period. Hospitalization data is provisional and may be updated as reports are received by the Department.
    • “Hospitalized” refers to patients admitted as inpatients to inpatient or observation beds, and does not include patients who have been treated and released from an emergency department.
    • Prior to October 2026, this data was collected through HERDS, the Department’s Health Electronic Response Data System.
  • Population estimates come from the U.S. Population and Housing Unit Estimation Program. Demographic data will be updated annually on July 1. This could lead to disjunctions in the trend lines on this date.
