Two identical gears, each with eight teeth, rotate at the same speed, their teeth touching as they rotate. When viewers focus on one gear, the other, seen through peripheral vision, appears to spin faster – even though both are moving at the same speed.
The visual trick was revealed Tuesday during the competition for the best illusion of the year, sponsored by the Museum of Illusions, which is headquartered in Zagreb, Croatia, and has more than 70 museums around the world. A panel of scientists, artists, communicators and past winners selected the best candidates from several dozen submissions, and thousands of people voted online to determine the winners.
