In a head-to-head trial, Retatrutide crushes Ozempic

A looming contender in the weight-loss race has just overtaken a big-name rival. Eli Lilly’s retatrutide helped adults with type 2 diabetes lose about twice as much weight as the maximum dose of Ozempic was able to achieve in a large late-stage trial, the company announced Wednesday. Over 80 weeks, people taking the highest dose of retatrutide lost an average of 47.4 pounds, or 20.9 percent of their body weight, compared to 20.9 pounds, or 9.4 percent, with Ozempic, ABC News reports. Stat reports that the results “further strengthen” retatrutide’s “competitive profile,” calling the weight loss numbers particularly significant “given that people with diabetes don’t tend to lose much weight on the drugs.”

The weekly injection also appears to lead to greater improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol and A1C, a key marker of diabetes. The advantage may come from its “triple” action: retatrutide mimics three hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon – whereas current drugs only mimic one or two. Eli Lilly plans to seek FDA approval in early 2027.
