The New York Giants could potentially be in the market for Jonathan Taylor if the Indianapolis Colts decide to move the star amid their ongoing fire sale.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported Wednesday that the Giants are “looking” for a running back and defensive tackle before the Nov. 10 trade deadline.
Schultz’s report comes after the Colts began dismantling their roster Tuesday with trade guard Quenton Nelson and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner.
Giants general manager Joe Schoen told reporters Tuesday that he has been in contact with “teams that have already started some trades.”
ESPN’s Jordan Raanan previously reported that the asking price for Taylor is expected to be “a second-round pick and maybe higher.”
Schoen said those early discussions gave him “a pretty good idea of who might or might not be available.”
“It has to make sense, in the short and long term, when you take these steps,” Schoen said.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Wednesday that wide receiver Josh Downs has requested a trade from the Colts. Head coach Shane Steichen said Taylor didn’t do it on the same day.
Taylor is currently signed through the 2028 season. Schoen holds six picks, including first and second round selections, in the upcoming 2027 draft.
The Giants released Najee Harris last week after failing to get touches from Cam Skattebo in Week 6. Harris had expressed frustration at sharing touches with three other running backs before being cut.
Harbaugh said when asked about Harris’ complaints about rotating four running backs, he “would love” for the Giants to be in “a Derrick Henry circumstance or a Saquon Barkley circumstance.”
“Our running game hasn’t earned this yet, and none of these guys have,” Harbaugh said before Week 7.
The Giants remained in playoff contention despite losing Jaxson Dart partly because of the relatively weak NFC East and partly because JJ McCarthy led his team to an overtime victory against the Houston Texans in his first start for the Giants in Week 7.
The Athletic’s Dan Duggan reported before the game that the Giants decided to turn to McCarthy over Jameis Winston in part to make up for Dart’s absence from the team’s running game.
The Giants could hope to further strengthen this rushing attack before the deadline, potentially with a player that Harbaugh can rely on to the extent he relied on Henry with the Ravens, will help the franchise stay in playoff contention long enough for Dart to potentially return for the playoffs.
