Moments ago, PlayStation boss Hideaki Nishino took the stage at the first Crunchyroll Anime Future Forum to confirm that he would bring the anime into the PS5’s main menu with a “dedicated hub”, starting in spring 2027.
He said the initiative would help “make it easier for the PlayStation community to discover and explore the anime content they love.”
PS5 owners can already access Crunchy roll anime through the dedicated app available for the console, but this new initiative will bring the streaming service to the forefront.
Sony acquired the subscription platform for $1.1 billion in 2021.
I’ve asked Crunchyroll for mockup images of what this might look like, and will update when they respond.
Meanwhile, the statement said:
“Anime and video games have deeply engaged and overlapping fan communities, and the new experience will bring these worlds closer together on PS5. Anime and video games have deeply engaged and overlapping fan communities, and the new experience will bring these worlds closer together on PS5.”
PS Productions is working on its own animated series with Ghost of Tsushima: Legendswhich will be released next year.
Meanwhile, Sony has singled out anime as a massive growth driver, as it continues its transition into entertainment. It is currently one of the main players in the market, since its subsidiary Sony Music also owns Aniplex.
What do you think about adding anime to the PS5 home screen with its own dedicated hub area? Let me know below.
