“Heat” director Michael Mann was hospitalized over the weekend after accidentally discharging a gun at a shooting range in Los Angeles.
The incident resulted in Mann suffering a minor subcutaneous injury, according to a representative for the Emmy Award-winning filmmaker. Mann, 83, has been target shooting for decades and was practicing at the range when the accident occurred.
“On Saturday, at a shooting range, a gun accidentally discharged while in its holster, causing a superficial injury to director Michael Mann,” his representative said in a statement. “He was treated and is being released.”
The Los Angeles Police Department also confirmed that officers who responded to a radio call about shots fired at the scene Saturday determined the shooting was accidental.
The subject was transported to a local hospital in stable condition, a spokesperson said, and the LAPD cleared the scene after taking an injury report.
Mann is best known for his crime dramas, including his 1981 feature debut “Thief,” the 1986 thriller “Manhunter” and the 1995 crime epic “Heat.”
He told Vulture in 2017 that the “Heat” actors fired blanks from full loads to recreate the sound of real gunshots rather than relying on altered sound effects.
“That’s the sound the guns actually made and you couldn’t imitate them or improve on them,” Mann said. “It was terrifying as hell because we were in these canyons of glass and steel and the shots were echoing in a certain real way, so they had an authenticity to the place that was really unique.”
Mann is reportedly developing “Heat 2” as an adaptation of his 2022 novel of the same name, which he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner.
