House Speaker Mike Johnson won’t remain Republican leader after GOP defeats

WASHINGTON — A day after Democrats won the House majority, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told his staff in a phone call this morning that he would not remain Republican leader in the new Congress, according to four sources present on the call.

His announcement follows massive losses for his party in the House races on Tuesday.

Johnson served two terms as president, having been elected after Republicans ousted Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., from the top job in 2023.

His future plans are not known.

Johnson’s departure will leave the position of parliamentary minority leader vacant. Republicans are scheduled to hold internal elections to select their candidate for this position next week, on November 10.
