1. MLB makes a proposal, MLBPA says no
The league rejected its latest collective bargaining proposal on Tuesday. The proposed deal included an adjustment to the salary cap system, but only a minor adjustment. It would take effect in 2028 instead of 2027. Since a deferred salary cap remains a salary cap, the MLBPA quickly rejected the plan. The proposal wasn’t limited to the salary cap timeline, details of which can be viewed here, but that will remain the sticking point between the two sides.
2. Rays to guard Rasmussen?
Right-handed Drew Rasmussen would be one of the most sought-after weapons on the trade market if Tampa Bay wanted to move him. We have him second on the list of potential trade candidates, behind only the left-leaning Angels. Reid Detmers. President of baseball operations Erik Neander, however, opposed the idea of trading with Rasmussen. “I can confidently sit here and say that every intention right now is to think about “Ras” which anchors our rotation.” Neander told reporters yesterday. The Rays picked up Rasmussen’s $20 million club option, which would make him the highest-paid player of all time, if he remains on the roster.
3. And then there were two
One of three managerial positions was filled Tuesday, with the Mariners hiring Jason Kanzler as their new skipper. Kanzler served as the Cubs’ director of player development for the past three seasons. At 36, he is the second-youngest manager in the league, behind Blake Butera of the Nationals. The last two current managerial openings are the Astros and Angels. Houston Research Now Led by New CEO Randy Flores. The team will interview Rangers bench coach Luis Urueta and has already met with Yankees bench coach. Brad Ausmus.
