Tuesday’s midterm elections were a generational wipeout for the Republican Party, whose refusal to stand up to President Donald Trump led the party to potentially lose nine Senate seats, dozens of House seats, at least five governorships and at least 11 state legislative chambers.
The GOP’s defeat was so significant that the party will enter a political wilderness in 2027, both in Congress and at the state level, thwarting its efforts to rig the system in its favor.
The ballots are still being counted. But with the vast majority of votes cast, here are nine of the most astonishing results from the blue tsunami.
1. James Talarico had won the Texas Senate race before Election Day.
Sen.-elect James Talarico, Democrat of Texas, won nearly 4.4 million early votes. That’s more than the approximately 4.2 million total ballots received by Republican candidate Ken Paxton.

2. No Republican will represent a seat won by Kamala Harris in 2024.
The number of Republican-held crossover districts — which are seats held by Republican lawmakers and won by a Democrat at the presidential level — has declined rapidly in recent decades.
After the 2000 election, Republicans held 40 crossover districts, according to the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia. After the 2024 elections, only three Republican lawmakers held seats won by former Vice President Kamala Harris.
Now, after the blue tsunami of 2026, all these crusading Republicans are gone.
3. Every district that Trump won by 11 percentage points or less in 2024 went to Democrats.
Yes, you read that right.
So far, not only have Republicans lost every seat that was Trump+11 or less, but Democrats also flipped four GOP-held districts that Trump won by 15 points or more, according to Reuters.
4. Nearly every House district swung Democratic.
A New York Times analysis showed that unlike previous midterm cycles, where waves hit some geographic areas and not others, 2026 was a nearly uniform shift in favor of Democrats.
According to the Times:
“As of Thursday afternoon, every district won by Donald J. Trump in 2024 when he took over the presidency flipped to the Democrats. Democrats won 52 of the 234 districts Mr. Trump won in 2024.”
5. Republican gerrymandering was not right.
Through gerrymandering, Republicans tilted 15 House districts in their favor. No winner was decided in two of those races, but in the remaining 13, Republicans flipped only two: Tennessee’s 9th District and Texas’ 32nd.
This is not to say that Republican gerrymandering has completely failed. In a less favorable environment, Democrats would likely have lost more targeted seats. But on Tuesday, they largely overcame the asymmetrical cards.
6. Democrats dominated along the southern border.
Democrats now control all House seats along the U.S.-Mexico border. This is a sign that Trump’s immigration measures have backfired.
7. Democrats will have the largest majority in the House in decades.
Ultimately, Democrats could hold as many as 260 House seats in January, when the new Congress is sworn in. That would be the largest House majority for either party since 1993, when Democrats had 267 House seats to the GOP’s 167.

8. A black Democrat won a Mississippi county named after the founder of the Ku Klux Klan.
Scott Colom, the Democratic candidate for Mississippi Senate, won Forrest County by a margin of 54% to 43% over Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith. The county is named for Nathan Bedford Forrest, Confederate general and first grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.
Colom currently leads incumbent Hyde-Smith by more than 1,900 votes and is favored to turn the Magnolia seat blue for the first time since the 1980s.
9. Democrats won the Senate popular vote in the former Confederate states by nearly 3 million votes.
It turns out that Republican efforts to disenfranchise black voters backfired, with black voter turnout rising in the South.
