Former “Good Morning America Weekend” anchor Janai Norman is “taking a break” from the United States – and has moved her family to South Africa months after her appearance on the show abruptly ended without warning.
Norman, whose contract was not renewed by ABC in April, revealed the move on Friday and appears to have settled in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province with her husband, Eli, and their three children, according to The Sun.
“Less than two months after publishing, I’m forcing myself to post daily for 60 days and use stories,” Norman posted on his Instagram Stories, referencing his upcoming memoir, “Breaking.”
“On that note, pre-orders are really important. Have you ordered yours?” she added in a separate post.
“And speaking of breakups, did I mention my family is taking a break from the States? » Norman then wrote about a photograph of a palm-lined street overlooking the water.
She shared a video of monkeys gathered on the side of a road in a final post, adding: “And now we see monkeys all the time. »
Norman’s decision comes seven months after she was forced out of her role as co-anchor of “Good Morning America Weekend” when the Disney-owned network refused to renew her contract.
Norman, who joined “GMA Weekend” in 2022 after being hired by ABC News in 2016, was “not well liked” by network bosses and reportedly clashed with colleagues, Status reported in August.
She first joined ABC News as an intern at NewsOne in 2011.
Norman spoke about the sudden departure at the time, saying she had hoped to spend more time at the network.
“I was hoping we would have more time. It was hard for me that our time was cut short. I loved my job,” she said in a video posted to X in April.
“So it really breaks my heart that I can’t say goodbye. I’m really sorry I can’t say goodbye. It would have been fun,” she added.
She later unfollowed “GMA” on social media.
Norman, who was born in South Africa and raised in DeKalb, Illinois, listed her six-bedroom home in Montclair, New Jersey, for $3.2 million earlier this year.
The home is listed at $3 million, a slight reduction from the original asking price.
Norman has since publicly criticized ABC’s coverage of several stories after leaving the network.
She accused the news organization of becoming “complicit in maintaining white supremacy” while criticizing Michael Strahan’s interview with the parents of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old found dead after a boating trip in Mississippi.
“Bless Michael, because he was right the first time. The question should have been, ‘Do you believe that?’ I’m not asking these grieving parents to defend a decision that we don’t even know for sure their deceased son made,” she said in an Instagram video in July.
“It was not an objective question. Subjectively, I would say it was insensitive,” she added.
