Russell Brand ‘cowers in fear’ in cell as he shouts abusive chants at him: report

It seems that Russell Brand is not getting a warm welcome behind bars.

The convicted rapist “trembles in fear” as hundreds of his fellow inmates taunt him with an abusive chant that they allegedly repeat over and over again, the Daily Mail reports.

Prisoners at HMP Wandsworth, where the ‘Take Him to the Greek’ actor has been held since he was found guilty of rape and three counts of sexual assault on Thursday, chanted: “There’s a brand new nuncio in the wing! A brand new nuncio. Brand, you’re a f***ing lairy now.”

“Nonce” is a British slang term that refers to “a rapist or child molester; a sex offender,” according to Dictionary.com.

For those who don’t know, “dairy” is defined as “behaving in a loud and excited manner, especially when having fun or drinking alcohol,” according to the Cambridge English Dictionary.

Page Six previously reported that Wandsworth was one of London’s most troubled prisons.

Inside, inmates are forced to reside in a facility rife with overcrowding, vermin and violence, according to an official report from the watchdog.

The Howard League for Penal Reform found that the prison had 1,457 inmates, although it certified normal accommodation for 894 people. This means it is operating at 163% of its normal capacity.

Worse still, living conditions inside were described as “inhumane” in a grim 2024 report by Wandsworth’s Independent Monitoring Board.

The report reveals that a “cramped” single-occupancy cell was usually shared by two inmates, who were sometimes forced to go two or three weeks without a complete change of clothes.

Showers, meanwhile, have been described as damp, unhygienic and limited in number, with poor ventilation creating an ideal environment for mold to grow.

Prisoners were routinely locked in their cells for up to 22 hours a day – sometimes without access to basic outdoor exercise due to staff shortages – with crumbling floors letting in vermin, intermittent heating in winter, and summer temperatures sometimes reaching 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Violence was also found to be a problem in the 2023-2024 reporting period, with 442 assaults between prisoners and 518 against staff, 998 incidents of self-harm involving 302 men and a total of 10 deaths – six of which were “apparently self-inflicted”.

Strict security procedures also limit a maximum of three visitors per inmate at a time, all subject to a “frisk search” and mandatory dress code.

On the bright side, prisoners have access to educational and vocational training; activities like yoga, mindfulness, parenting, embroidery and choir; and the ability to maintain contact with their families through monthly family days, homework clubs, video calls, phone calls and emails.

The Sun previously reported that Brand was left “petrified” on his first night in Wandsworth after being subjected to a “humiliating” strip search, a “first night packet” of toiletries and food.

He also had a three-minute phone call with his wife, Laura, who supported him throughout his trial.

Brand’s conviction follows a nearly two-year investigation launched after several women came forward with allegations.

He pleaded not guilty and denied all allegations against him throughout the trial.

A British legal expert told Page Six Brand he faced “eight or nine years” in prison for the crimes he was convicted of.

Since his conviction, Brand has faced two other rape charges.

Brand’s sentencing is scheduled for Monday.
