Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the armed robbery of Pretty Little Liars star Keegan Allen “egregious” after the bloodied actor publicly challenged her and Governor Gavin Newsom to use California’s network of surveillance cameras to catch his attackers.
Allen, 37, targeted the two Democratic leaders Thursday night after being robbed at gunpoint and knifepoint outside a luxury grocery store in West Hollywood, questioning whether the controversial Flock camera network could help track down the suspects.
“Hopefully all these cameras put together by @karenbassla @gavinnewsom and everyone think they will stop crime can find these very dangerous criminals. God bless,” he wrote in an Instagram post Thursday evening.
The actor, who shared security footage of the attack, said the encounter left him bloodied and without his watch — and lamented that West Hollywood was “no longer safe.”
“My life for a watch,” he said.
Although the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office and the LAPD do not represent or have jurisdiction over WeHo, they both play a vital role in ensuring the safety of Los Angeles and the surrounding region.
“It’s egregious — no one should have to experience something like this,” Bass’ office told the California Post. “West Hollywood is an independent city and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is responsible for leading this investigation. The LAPD, as always, will assist regional partners as necessary to ensure bad actors are held accountable.”
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told the Post that deputies responded to Laurel Supply around 9:05 p.m. Thursday after receiving a report of a theft.
Officers met with Allen, who told them two suspects dressed in black had targeted him. One allegedly pointed a “silver handgun” at him while the other brandished a knife and demanded his watch and bracelet.
“A short time later, the victim was struck in the face with a handgun. The suspects obtained the victim’s watch and fled the scene in an unknown vehicle,” the department told the Post.
Allen suffered a “laceration to his forehead” in the attack, but was not taken to a hospital after Los Angeles County firefighters examined him. He said he went to the hospital himself and “definitely suffered a concussion.”
It remains unclear whether investigators will use Flock cameras to help identify suspects. The sheriff’s department would not tell the California Post whether the technology would be used in the investigation.
Surveillance cameras are installed throughout the city and in West Hollywood.
The cameras, which scan license plates, have become a hot spot in California due to concerns about privacy and data sharing with federal immigration authorities.
Flock, based in Atlanta, has been accused of sharing data with ICE to help track illegal immigrants. The LAPD suspended its agreement with the company in July while contract negotiations were underway.
Bass herself criticized Flock, saying in August that the company had “lost the trust of Angelenos and residents across the country, particularly in immigrant communities targeted by the federal administration.”
“There are many companies providing this technology to cities across the country,” Bass said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times. “The LAPD needs to identify another company that is not sharing data.”
Newsom vetoed a bill last year that would have restricted how police can use data and placed more requirements on its processing.
Allen is best known for playing Toby Cavanaugh in “Pretty Little Liars” from 2010 to 2017. He then starred as Liam Walker in the drama “Walker” from 2021 to 2024. He recently appeared in an episode of “The Rookie” this year.
