Kaitlan Collins Describes Trump’s Displeasure With Katie Zacharia’s Briefing
CNN’s Kaitlan Collins recently spoke to X to share her thoughts on why Donald Trump might have hired Katie Zacharia as his new White House press secretary, only to fire her days later.
Zacharia took over this role following the resignation of Karoline Leavitt in August 2026.
In his message, Collins suggested the president was “increasingly irritated” by the length of the Leavitt replacement process. She said Trump rushed to hire Zacharia as his press secretary because he “wanted more people to defend him on television.” According to the journalist, after a difficult first briefing, Trump believed that Zacharia had failed in this task and “knew she had to go.”
Collins added: “I was told that Trump was embarrassed by the media coverage of Zacharia’s briefing and when he asked other aides about it, Zacharia had few allies willing to defend her or her performance.”
In an October 12 article on Truth Social, Trump announced that Zacharia would be the new White House press secretary. He mentioned that he thought she would do a “fantastic job” during her first briefing. However, Zacharia’s first interaction with the press came under scrutiny after she appeared to fumble parts of her speech.
A White House official later confirmed that Zacharia would leave his post after a rocky start. After firing her, Trump told reporters that he asked Zacharia to reconsider her role because of how the press had treated her. He said: “I told him, ‘I think you better be happy.’ I want her to have a good life. I don’t want her to have a life like she’s been living the last three days” (via CBC).
