Ukrainian President Zelensky said Monday that his country was subjected to another night of Russian missile and drone strikes, “and again there was no warning from its partners.”
Zelensky accused the United States of limiting intelligence and possibly other aid to Ukraine amid renewed tensions with President Trump, who accused the Ukrainian leader over the weekend of not wanting to end the war. Mr Trump has significantly softened the US government’s policy towards Russia, easing sanctions to allow Russian energy sales in a bid to lower US gas prices.
Zelenskyy believes that these measures risk emboldening Moscow and allowing it to continue and intensify its efforts over the past four and a half years, full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The target of the most recent strikes was energy and other infrastructure, Zelenskyy said, adding that a medical clinic, a school, a metro station and “ordinary residential buildings” were also hit.
Zelensky said As of Saturday, Ukraine was still unable to use Starshield, an upgraded military version of Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite technology, to intercept Russian drones. The network is crucial to Ukrainian forces because it allows them to shoot down Russian jet drones and other weapons.
The Trump administration has denied making any changes to the intelligence it shares with Ukraine or deliberately slowing down Starshield data.
A senior Pentagon official told CBS News on Monday: “There has been no change in War Department policy regarding intelligence sharing or the capabilities we allow the Europeans to provide to Ukraine. »
Asked Saturday whether the U.S. government was responsible for changing Starlink service in Ukraine, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he was “not sure Zelensky knows what he’s talking about, but it wasn’t deliberate…we had nothing to do with it.”
“In the United States, no one ordered the speed of Starlink to be slowed down. It kind of happened, but my understanding is that it was restored. It went back to where it was before,” he said, without specifying what he meant by “it kind of happened.”
Denys Sienik, Ukraine’s charge d’affaires and current top diplomat in the United States, told CBS News in a statement Saturday that Ukraine has yet to receive a response from the Pentagon or Musk’s SpaceX to inquiries about the Starlink or Starshield service, “including confirmation that unlimited speeds have been restored and that Starshield is operating as it did before.”
“There are political agreements that have not been implemented at the operational level,” Zelenskyy said in a post on X on Monday, adding that there were also “delays in certain types of vital supplies at the US War Department level.”
He did not elaborate on his claim that the Pentagon was delaying shipments of supplies.
The Ukrainian leader issued the statement amid an increasingly terse exchange of accusations with Mr. Trump, who over the weekend accused Zelensky of not wanting the war sparked by Russia’s full-scale invasion to end.
In an article for Truth Social, Mr. Trump said that Zelensky “doesn’t want to end this war, and probably never has.”
“He could have made a better deal two years ago than today. His country is in ruins, much of its land is lost, its oceans and seas are gone, and its male population is weak, injured and/or dead,” Mr. Trump argued.
The US president last month reversed sanctions on Russia – which had the support of a majority of Republicans and Democrats – which were aimed at increasing financial pressure on Moscow following its attack on Ukraine.
“Ukraine never wanted this war,” Zelensky said in another statement shared Monday on social media. “We have taken literally EVERY attempt by our partners to end this war with dignity.”
Just over a week ago, Mr. Trump said in a social media post that Ukraine and Russia had agreed to an “energy ceasefire,” which would mean stopping attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure. Neither Moscow nor kyiv acknowledged accepting such a deal, and hours later Ukrainian authorities reported new Russian attacks on refineries.
Zelensky said that “again and again Russia’s responses” to diplomatic efforts were new attacks.
“Putin does not want an end to this war, or even any de-escalation measures,” he said, adding: “It is very important to call things by their names. Call the aggressor an aggressor and help Ukraine protect lives. When the supply of missiles to Ukrainian air defense is blocked and Russia receives a weakening or postponement of sanctions, this is unfortunately a denial of reality on the part of the partners. In reality, the war continues, and only continues because of the Russian strikes – the Russian desire to prolong this war.
The Kremlin, for its part, has tried to present Russia as a willing partner in peace efforts.
Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday that Moscow appreciated U.S. mediation efforts, but that it was impossible to reach agreements without the participation of representatives from kyiv. There have been direct talks, mediated by the United States, between Ukraine and Russia, but so far the meetings have only resulted in prisoner exchanges and not ceasefires.
The Wall Street Journal first reported Sunday evening that Putin had proposed a meeting between U.S., Chinese and Russian officials to discuss solutions to the war in Ukraine, but without Ukraine having a seat at the negotiating table. The newspaper said he proposed the summit idea during a call with Mr. Trump on October 9.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said in a message on Monday that “a trilateral meeting between the leaders of Russia, China and the United States would only have the opposite effect: encouraging Putin to continue this war.”
