Democrats target Oklahoma gubernatorial race

The Democratic Governors Association announced Tuesday it would invest half a million dollars to flip the governor’s mansion in Oklahoma, a state the president won by 34 points in 2024.

The race between former Republican state Sen. Mike Mazzei and the Democratic State Representative. Cindy Munson is a statistical equalityaccording to recent polls. This includes an internal Munson Workbench Strategy survey obtained by POLITICO, showing Mazzei has an advantage but within the margin of error.

The investment marks an unusually aggressive Democratic play in one of the nation’s darkest bastions and underscores the scale of the Democrats’ battleground in the homestretch of the midterm elections.

The last Democrat to win the gubernatorial race was Brad Henri in 2006, but Democrats are betting that the relatively modest investment in what is shaping up to be a big Democratic year could be enough to cause a huge upset. They say their dollars will be more useful than in other states, helping Munson cover the airwaves with digital and television ads.
