Judge imposes new limits on Trump golf course renovation

A federal judge has extended an order blocking the felling of trees at a Washington, D.C. golf course that President Donald Trump is seeking to renovate, while imposing new notice requirements for any other major changes the administration seeks to make to the golf course.

The new 70-page opinion from U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes cites Trump’s own statements regarding his plans for the East Potomac Golf Course.

The judge said she was forced to act now in this long-simmering dispute — which came to a head in recent weeks because the administration cut down more than 400 trees on the land without notice — “because the government did what it said it wouldn’t do.”

The move is a major setback for Trump’s efforts to transform the beloved but modest public golf course into a championship-level course. This also opens the way to a battle in the court of appeal in a case which had given rise to heated confrontations between the administration and the judiciary.
