Cowboys defense recently held a players-only meeting. This is a common technique for struggling teams.
In the opinion of longtime Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, there’s a clear conclusion to be drawn about a team that feels obligated to hold a players-only meeting. He was asked for his opinion on the subject during a visit to New heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce, Tomlin kept it short and not sweet.
“I think you are dead” Tomlin said.
Tomlin then offered a more specific assessment. “If this happened, I wish I didn’t hear about it,” Tomlin said. “The fact that you’re hearing about it is what makes it stupid.”
We don’t recall hearing about a players-only meeting in Tomlin’s 19 years with the Steelers. This may be one of the reasons why the Steelers have never had a losing season in nearly two decades with Tomlin at the helm.
In any other context, the idea of those who are ruled meeting in the absence of their designated leaders would be considered unusual. If students gather without the teacher present or if workers gather without management, this would be considered planning for a potential mutiny.
Ultimately, why would actors, students, workers feel obliged to come together in the absence of those who are supposed to lead them? Especially when, as Simms said Live PFTthere are a lot of team meetings, offense/defense and different position groups.
It is a manifestation of despair. And that necessarily tells the world that players think coaches aren’t giving them the answers they need, so they seek their own answers.
