New seasons of Netflix hits Black doves And The Hunting Wives; an Australian alien comedy from the makers of Bluey; a Julia Garner-led dramatic tale of the rise and fall of the FTX crypto empire; Lee Chang-dong’s critically acclaimed Oscar favorite; Philomena Cunk explaining the power of cinema; and football, real and imagined, with the NFL and Peter Berg’s latest film are just some of the highlights of the new film and television projects coming to Netflix in November.
The hit Netflix series returns for a second season on November 5. Black doves. Something of a sexier version of Slow horses, Black doves is another spy drama set in London and starring Keira Knightley, Ben Wishaw and the always amazing Sarah Lancashire. The action of Season 2 picks up after the event of the first season, with “Helen (Knightley) continues to betray her nation’s secrets to the secret organization she serves: the Black Doves. But after the misadventures of last Christmas, and with her husband Wallace (Andrew Buchan) preparing to become Prime Minister, she walks a line more treacherous than ever.”
Netflix launches arguably its best film for an Oscar in 2027 on November 6 with that of Lee Chang-dong. Love is possible. The long-awaited film from the Korean auteur behind the modern classic Burning, Love is possible debuted at this year’s Venice Film Festival where it won the Silver Lion. The film received critical acclaim and currently has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, 95 on Metacritic, and 4.2 on Letterboxd. Hmmm, sounds like a must-have. A logline from the film reads: “The story of two married couples – a laid-off worker and his wife and a documentary filmmaker and her wife – crossing paths to film a documentary and confronting their different lives and hidden desires.” »
A potential intellectual cinema palate cleanser Love is possible is Jeffrey Walker’s Allen which debuts on November 12. An original Australian film, Allen tells the story of a man who nostalgically longs for the return of the alien he met as a child, and whose life was turned upside down upon his return. The comedy feature comes from Ludo Studio (yes, the people behind Blue!) so the Australian creative team leans into silly humor.
On November 15, Philomena Cunk is back with more thoughts on how the world works. This time, our intrepid Philomène addresses the theme of cinema, in Cunk at the cinema. In six episodes, Cunk traces the history of the moving image and its impact on society and culture. Along the way, grills like Michael Bay and Benedict Cumberbatch, so much so that they remain baffled. Diane Morgan returns from Cunk and the series is written by Black Mirror’s Charlie Brooker. Look at him! You won’t regret it.
On November 18, Netflix unveils its major limited series, potentially decisive for the discourse. The altruists. The latest tech-bros-suck project to hit the timeline, the eight episodes delve into the spectacular rise and fall of the founders of crypto empire FTX. The series synopsis reads: “The story of Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison, two hyper-intelligent and ambitious young idealists who attempted to remake the world’s financial system in the blink of an eye – before being accused of stealing $8 billion and becoming the Bonnie & Clyde of Generation Z.” Emmy winner Julia Garner plays Caroline and Anthony Boyle plays Sam. The show is created, written and directed by award-winning Graham Moore of an Oscar.
Netflix’s big Hollywood movie for November is Peter Berg’s The mosquito bowlwhich debuts on a big day for football on the streamer. Debuting on November 25, the film is based on Buzz Bissinger’s 2022 non-fiction book. The Mosquito Bowl: a game of life and death during World War II on the legendary game of bowls. The synopsis reads: “After the attack on Pearl Harbor, four of America’s biggest college football stars put their fame aside to enlist in the Marines. As they prepare for the brutal invasion of Okinawa, they will participate in a legendary game featuring some of the greatest players in history – a game that, for many, will be the last they play.” The film stars Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson and Tom Francis. The film is in a way a Friday Night Lights reunion featuring Berg, Bissinger, producer Brian Grazer and music provided by Explosions in the Sky.
It’s the big event on November 25. NFL Netflix Gameday: Thanksgiving Eve will see the Packers take on the Rams at SoFi Stadium and it will be the NFL’s first-ever Thanksgiving game. Netflix and the league are taking this matter very seriously and are looking to make it a key date in the television calendar. So they pushed the boat out and hired U2 to provide halftime entertainment.
And finally, November 26 will see the return of the ridiculously entertaining series, The Hunting Wives. Malin Akerman’s Margo and Brittany Snow’s Sophie are back and up to no good once again, but as Season 2 begins, “Sophie and Margo are estranged. But soon enough, old secrets and new enemies force them to reunite. As they play their dangerous games, the question arises. Are they the hunters or the hunted?” The series has been a huge success for Netflix and has already been renewed for a third season.
