Preview and Picks: Oregon to Illinois

CHAMPAGNE — Oregon And Illinois came into the season with very different expectations. But heading into Saturday’s matchup at 2 p.m. CT at Gies Memorial Stadium, the Ducks and Fighting Illini aren’t where they wanted to be halfway through the regular season.

Both have disappointed expectations.

Oregon entered the season as the No. 2 team in the AP Preseason Top 25 and a top favorite for the Big Ten and national title, but the Ducks (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) struggled to get off the ground, falling to both. Oklahoma State And UCLA and I can barely get by Boise State and Nebraska. They will enter Champaign unranked.

Meanwhile, Illinois entered the season having posted 19 wins over the previous two seasons and set out to play in a third straight bowl game for the first time in three decades. But the Illini (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) have performed like a bottom-six team in the Big Ten thus far — falling to Purdue (3-4) in a rivalry game before an overtime victory at Michigan State (2-5) – and will most likely be underdogs in at least five of their last six games.

Both teams also lost their starting quarterbacks and will rely on backups on Saturday – although the experience level between the backups is wide.

With the Oregon star Dante Moore in concussion protocol since vicious hit to head during victory U.S.C. Last month, Oregon already started two different quarterbacks, Dylan Raiola And Thomas Thomas – and benched them both. But Raiola, holder for two years at Nebraska with 23 career Big Ten starts and 5,334 career passing yards, is expected to start against the Illini after relieving Thomas and leading Oregon to a victory against the Cornhuskers.

Meanwhile, Illinois will turn to freshmen Michael ClaytonIIwho will make his first career start at starting quarterback Katin Houser out 4 to 6 weeks due to hand injury. In relief of Houser, Clayton threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and overtime to help Illinois hold off Michigan State two weeks ago.

Both teams are desperate for a win. For Oregon to keep its faint College Football Playoff hopes alive (12.9%, according to ESPN FPI). For Illinois, to keep its hopes dwindling (27.4%, according to ESPN FPI).

The losing team’s goals for the 2026 season will take a big hit on Saturday.
