Martha Plimpton has joined the list of stars speaking out on “Saturday Night Live’s” Shane Gillis’ poorly received opening monologue.
“There’s this guy Shane Gillis that I’ve never heard of who said some really stupid shit live on ‘SNL’ on Saturday,” the “Goonies” star said in a video posted to his Instagram. “That’s some stupid shit. He deserves a spanking from his mother.”
Plimpton also talked about watching a documentary about Lore Michaels, who created and executive produces the sketch comedy series. “There was a scene that took place in Lorne’s office where, between the taping of rehearsals and the live show, a group of people gather in Lorne’s office to decide what’s going to be cut and what’s going to be broadcast. It was all the white men in the room deciding. All the white men. And maybe even all the straight white men,” she said. “I think Lorne needs more women in this room making decisions. Right? Yeah, I think so.” She continued to shout out her love for “SNL” mainstay Kenan Thompson, who commented on the video. “Shane who?” » her caption read.
Gillis sparked outrage over his misogynistic opening monologue almost immediately after taking the stage Saturday night. Most of the criticism he faced was the result of a joke about women’s workout clothes. “I haven’t been to the gym in so long, I didn’t know women dress like whores now?” he said. “Look, I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe it. Have you seen it? I’ve seen it. Have you seen the shorts? They’re these neon colored shorts, like artificial bait, and the wrinkles go around the cheeks and all combine at the asshole. And don’t look! You’re not allowed to look.”
Dan Levy shared an Instagram Reel on Sunday reacting to the monologue with disbelief. “Women who wear short shorts to the gym don’t make them whores. It makes men call them misogynists,” he said. “There’s a difference there. In fact, I’ve seen more men’s nipples at the gym than women showing off their bodies.”
