Steve Sarkisian does not rule out benching Arch Manning

The University of Texas’ 2026 season is quickly imploding. And that could result in quarterback Arch Manning being benched.

Via Danny Davis of Austin, American StatesmanLonghorns coach Steve Sarkisian opened the door to replace Manning after Saturday’s 27-24 loss to Florida.

When asked if Sarkisian was considering making a change at quarterback, he said: “I just felt like we haven’t played good offensive football and we’re not playing good offensive football right now. So it’s all going to be evaluated.”

Sarkisian was then asked if that meant his starting quarterback.

“Everything means everything,” Sargsyan replied.

If KJ Lacey replaces Manning, the college careers of Peyton and Eli’s nephew would be turned upside down. It wasn’t long ago that Arch was the betting favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2027 draft. If Sarkisian removes Manning from the roster, it will likely be another year before he joins the NFL — perhaps after transferring to a new program.

Against Florida, Manning struggled. Last week, two fourth-quarter interceptions in the Red River Rivalry paved the way for Texas’ first loss of the season, 27-24 against Oklahoma. Next week, Texas will host Mississippi.

Carrying the name Manning is both a blessing and a curse. This allowed Arch to earn millions in NIL payments. It has also prompted increased scrutiny and the creation of a high bar that it is currently far from meeting.
