WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump will hold rallies for Senate midterm candidates in Kansas and Iowa on Sunday, Nov. 1, after canceling planned visits days before the midterm elections.
A source familiar with the plans confirmed that the rallies had resumed, saying the dates had been rearranged to accommodate the dozens of tele-rallies Trump is planning for Republican candidates in the final days of the midterm campaign.
Trump then spoke about the schedule changes to reporters in the Oval Office on Friday, October 30, saying he had received calls from Republicans in both states asking him to come.
“We have some races that are very important, and they said if you could go there, it would be better than a tele-rally,” Trump said. “And I tried to dissuade them. I said: ‘How about a tele-rally?’ But they asked me. So I’m going on Sunday.”
On Thursday, Oct. 29, Trump abruptly canceled weekend rallies in Kansas for Sen. Roger Marshall and Iowa Rep. Ashley Hinson, as polls show a tight Senate in two states that historically vote Republican. Trump exploded at a reporter who later asked him if he canceled his trip to Kansas because he was tired of traveling.
“You’ve been following me for two weeks. I feel perfect. You’re disgusting. Get in shape. You look like hell,” Trump told the Reuters reporter.
Trump’s rally in Salina Kansas was originally scheduled to take place a day early on Saturday. October 31, while the rally in Dubuque, Iowa, will continue on November 1.
When Trump initially canceled the Kansas trip, the move sparked speculation about whether Trump and Republicans had abandoned the state.
Several polls suggest Democratic candidate Adam Hamilton has opened a lead in a state that last elected a Democratic senator in 1932. A Washington Post poll released Friday found Hamilton ahead of Marshall by between 52% and 43% among likely voters, while a CNN poll found a narrower 4-point lead for Hamilton, within the survey’s margin of error. Trump won Kansas by 16 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election.
In Iowa, Hinson narrowly leads Democratic candidate Josh Turek by less than a percentage point, according to an average of recent polls from Real Clear Politics. Trump carried Iowa in 2024 by 13 percentage points.
Trump held more than two dozen rallies during the home stretch of the midterm campaign as he sought to energize the MAGA base. Yet polls show the president’s popularity is at an all-time low in many of the states he is visiting, including Kansas and Iowa, making his appearance a risk for midterm candidates.
While the president often speaks for nearly two hours at nightly rallies, Trump’s voice has become hoarse in recent days as he maintains his hectic schedule of appearances. Trump is holding a rally in Dayton Beach, Florida on Friday, October 30.
