After feeling the wrath of Swifties, New York Knicks guard Tyler Kolek is returning to his comments about Taylor Swift.
In a video on the NBA 2K League TikTok account, Kolek called Swift the “fakeest” Knicks fan and said her support for the team during its championship run was “a little performative.” He now admits he wasn’t aware of his level of fandom.
“Obviously with everything that’s going on, people have come back and sent me all the information about him being in the games,” Kolek said Saturday after the Knicks’ 109-97 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to Fred Katz of The Athletic. “And she was actually wearing a 13 jersey (in a photo). Probably Joakim Noah at the time with Carmelo (Anthony). So, I wasn’t aware of my Taylor Swift Knicks fandom, so it’s my fault.”
Kolek’s comments prompted the Knicks to issue a statement on the matter, saying: “Taylor Swift has been a Knicks fan for many years, has a long history with Madison Square Garden, and we are incredibly appreciative of her support of the organization.”
Katz noted that the Knicks played “Swift’s thunderous songs in the locker room” after Friday’s practice and Saturday’s victory, playing “Shake It Off” and then “You Belong With Me.”
“(The video) was everywhere. Everyone saw it,” Kolek said. “But that’s the way it is. To me, it’s just a question that was asked and maybe I answered it wrong. I take it on the chin. But I love her music. We were playing it five minutes ago and I’m singing every word of every song. Nothing against her at all.”
Kolek hopes to avoid further conflict with the Swifties, as he is one himself.
“I love his music. I probably know more songs than anyone in the locker room,” he said. “I just misspoke.”
