Young star Johan Manzambi proves his worth to Aston Villa’s rise

Among Bundesliga players at his position last season, Manzambi ranked first in progressive carries of 10 yards or more (116), shooting carries (13) and fouls won (78).

He then impressed at the World Cup, scoring twice in the 4-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, getting a goal and an assist in the 2-1 win over co-hosts Canada, and also recording an assist in the 2-0 win over Algeria.

Unfortunately for Manzambi and Switzerland, a knee injury ruled him out of the round of 16 on penalties against Colombia and their quarter-final loss to Argentina.

His performances last season were so impressive that Manzambi found himself on the 10-man shortlist for the Kopa Trophy, awarded to the world’s best player under the age of 21.

Also on the shortlist are Spain’s World Cup winners Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi, as well as Yan Diomande – whose performances earned him a move to Real Madrid, whose winner will be named on October 26.

Since his first start for Aston Villa on September 19 against Spurs, only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland – with six – has been involved in more goals among Premier League players in all competitions than Manzambi’s five (three goals, two assists).

Team-mate Nicolas Jackson, another to join Villa in the transfer window in a deal worth up to £65million from Chelsea, was quick to praise the youngster.

“He’s an incredible player,” Jackson said. “He continues to grow. I hope he can be better and better in every game, score goals and help me as well. I hope we work together and achieve a lot together.

“He will go far and hopefully not get hurt.”
